St Louis: Give Disney's Animal Kingdom a Chance!

St Louis has a FANTASTIC Zoo, and one of the things that makes it so beloved to St Louisans is that it's free, as is our Art Museum, History Museum, and Science Museum. We even have a sort of secondary free zoo, Grants Farm. When I'm talking to St Louisans about Walt Disney World, they often look at Animal Kingdom theme park as "just a Zoo" and opt to skip it, because paying theme park admission for a Zoo is unfathomable to us. Yes, of course there are rides, like Expedition Everest and Dinosaur. And even though I have never understood the popularity of the movie Avatar, I have to admit that Pandora: the World of Avatar is beautiful, and the ride Flight of Passage is magical. They have beautiful shows like Festival of the Lion King, Feathered Friends in Flight, and Kite Tails. All those things make it an excellent theme park, but still, isn't it mostly a zoo?

I'm not going to lie, I kind of agreed with them for a long time. But then Lil and I discovered the Disney+ show The Magic of Disney's Animal Kingdom, which is a show about veterinary care at Animal Kingdom theme park, Disney's Animal Kingdom Lodge Resort, and The Seas aquarium at Epcot. If you have kids who are into animals and vet shows, this is a must watch! It doesn't change the fact that it's a theme park with animals, but it gets you so much more invested in their stories. We enjoyed the show so much that when we decided to go to Walt Disney World for Christmas, we chose to spend Christmas Day at Animal Kingdom instead of one of the other parks, and I'm so glad we did! The thing we always neglected on past trips is taking the train to Rafiki's Planet Watch, because again, we have a Zoo at home and it has a train. WELL. The train to Rafiki's Planet Watch takes you through all the "back stage" barn areas, all the way out to the vet building you see on TV! They even have a window where you can watch some of the specialized procedures you see on the show! Of course no one was working on Christmas Day, but we will definitely be back on future trips. Since this trip I have been telling everyone, watch The Magic of Disney's Animal Kingdom before your trip, and don't skip this park! For even more Animal Kingdom fun, stay at Disney's Animal Kingdom Lodge resort! This is my absolute favorite for a homeschooler vacation, and I hope their Cultural Representatives from Africa will be back soon!
